Making a positive contribution to society
We are committed to managing our social responsibility and there is no better feeling than giving back to the South African community. The aim is to make a meaningful difference and one that can sustain itself into the future, so that all those who have benefited will hopefully one day turn around and do the same to others in need.
Area of focus
Caring for those that are unable to care for themselves: We contribute to many organisations, who are doing good work in providing for those who are unable to care for themselves.
Bursaries and study loans are made available to deserving students irrespective of race, colour or religious affiliation. The criteria being-outstanding achievement in matric or university, yet insufficient funds to pursue tertiary qualification.
Applications are considered annually before universities and other tertiary institutions open to prospective students, unfortunately not all applicants can be accommodated.
Developmental sports sponsorship
Sunfoil is involved in sport development at grass root level in order to make a difference to those who need it most in different sporting codes.
Sunfoil Township Cricket is an initiative that started in KwaZulu-Natal in 2007, primarily to expose children and teenagers living in townships and rural areas to participate in and develop skills in playing cricket.
The tournament has been an overwhelming success with many children experiencing the joys of playing cricket for the first time and others showing off their raw talent. Following on the huge momentum of success and participation generated by the Kwazulu-Natal franchise, Sunfoil Township Cricket headed to Gauteng in 2011 allowing even more youngsters to experience the spirit of cricket and benefit from this amazing coaching programme. Sunfoil is also involved in the development programmes at the KZN, Western Province and Gauteng Cricket unions.
An offshoot of this initiative is the offer of bursaries and scholarships to the participants of this project through the Sunfoil Education Fund to further their education or sports talent.
In 2018 Sunfoil launched its inaugural Soweto Schools Football League in collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Education and regional SAFA. The tournament brings together local schools from the area and helps to identify talented young footballers, both boys and girls in the u/12 age group.
Making jobs that lead to sustainability
We aim to not only provide jobs for our local people, but also to ensure that proper training skills are given to dedicated personnel and strive to empower our staff to be better and aim to be the best. Fortunately, we have a very low staff turnaround from unskilled labour through to skilled and administrative staff.
We are constantly seeking ways to uplift staff through skills and training programmes and always look to promote internally through development before looking to employ outside of the business.
Community upliftment projects
The Willowton Group contributes on a regular basis to various religious, welfare and community organisations, among others-Community Chest (Pietermaritzburg), Pietermaritzburg & Cape Town Society for the Blind, Muslim Charitable Foundation, Msunduzi Hospice and a number of schools in the KZN region especially that are in need of funds for building projects, providing meals, etc for children and other improvement projects.
Empowerment of staff
The group embarked on a unique project, in August 2008. Sasol offered BEE shares to previously disadvantaged individuals and organisations. We applied for shares for each of our employees that qualified (50 shares for those employed less than 5 years and 100 shares for employees over 5 years). It was a phenomenal success with employees being empowered to invest in their future and obtaining financial benefit at the same time.
Employees are encouraged to save and invest for their future. In some instances we assist staff with housing & other loans and where necessary pay their children’s education costs.
We have a clinic at Willowton Group staffed by a full time doctor. All staff are provided with free medical treatment and medicines, with the aim to make healthcare affordable and accessible to all employees.
